Disney World Dining Experience

A few years ago we started planning a 12 day trip to Disney World with 7 other families. As we calculated the cost and the time drew near, we ended up with 3 families; 6 adults and 8 kids. Kids’ outnumbering the adults was a scary thought! But it turned out fine and we all had a blast! I’m convinced that’s because of the extensive planning, agenda’s and daily itineraries that we put together, but that’s another story. What I’d like to focus on now is our food experience.

On previous trips to Disneyland it was hard to find healthy choices, let alone local choices, so I’m skeptical about this trip. I’m worried that not only will we eat food from all over the global, trucked zillions of miles to our dinner table, but that we’ll also gain weight in the process! … And I turn out to be right. Despite my best intentions to make wise choices, the food is just so good that some things are impossible to resist.

Detailing the meals and the gastronomic choices is too overwhelming. Suffice it to say that we stayed on the Disney World property and ate entirely their food choices. Considering that Florida is one of America’s leading agriculture producers, and that Disney is a multi-national conglomerate, a portion of our food was probably local, but it was really impossible to determine in any detail. One pleasing fact that I learned in Epcot is that quite a bit of Disney land and research money goes into exploring and creating efficient and leading edge ways to produce food. For example, they’ve perfected the art of the 4 pound lemon. Why a 4 pound lemon? Because it makes 1 pitcher of lemonade. OK, a bit weird. Other examples are the hydroponic and air grown produce. Now these are truly cool technologies; it will be interesting to see if they can make the leap to main stream food production.
